It was Mr. Ko W. G. Donma – a professor in the Agriculture Department of South Carolina State College – back in 1936 who saw a need to help people who did not have access to a financial institution. He led the chartering of Edisto Federal Credit Union which allowed them to pool their assets in order to help themselves. Mr. Donma and eleven other administrators and teachers from SC State College each paid $5 to secure the credit union’s charter in May 1936.
The credit union’s original field of membership was the public school teachers of Orangeburg County, and employees of South Carolina State College, now South Carolina State University. Since inception, Edisto FCU has expanded its membership to include employees of Claflin University, Orangeburg and Allendale County Public Schools, Calhoun County Public School District, Denmark Technical College and Voorhess College. The credit union hired its first full-time manager – Mrs. Lee Williams – in 1985.
The credit union’s primary goal has always been to maintain a sound financial program geared toward providing quality services to its members. As a result, the credit union has sustained steady growth in membership and assets, which are currently in excess of $23 million serving 3,400 members. It employs nine full-time and two part-time employees. The success of the credit union today is due in part to a dedicated corps of officers who volunteer their time and energy to promote its welfare.
As a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative, Edisto Federal Credit Union is committed to its members. Since its inception in 1936 the Edisto Federal Credit Union has been serving its members in and around the Orangeburg, South Carolina area with exceptional financial products. The service area has been expanded to include Allendale and Calhoun counties.
The Credit Union offers its members a full service website that allows for true “Banking From Home” functionality. Users have the ability to get account balances and history reports, transfer money between accounts, and so much more. Members can also take advantage of a full array of loans including real estate, business purpose loans, and new and used car loans.
We are registered as a multiple group type Credit Union. This means that anyone associated with a group that is primarily related to education may be eligible to join.
